Here's what Jeff believes the tech sector will bring us in 2021 Each year, I like to take an appearance at the huge image and anticipate what's simply around the corner. Long time readers of my work understand that I follow the most exciting tech patterns on the edge of mass adoption.
These patterns are experiencing rapid growth and developing amazing opportunities for investors. I wish to make sure all our readers are gotten ready for what's next. And with that in mind, let me draw the photo of what I see being available in the next 12 months 1. 5G Devices Our new 5G (fifth-generation) wireless networks are a subject I've been covering for years now.
Despite the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains in 2015, an outstanding 250 million 5G-enabled devices were still sold. Specifically in the second quarter, there were supply chain disruptions, producing hold-ups, and work blockages. And all of this ultimately caused Apple postponing the release of the 5G-enabled i, Phone 12 by 2 months.
When you think about all of that, selling 250 million units is amazing. More significantly, the delays brought on by the pandemic created a lots of suppressed need. Which need is now going to be pressed into 2021. In truth, I forecast that more than 500 million 5G devices will be shipped in 2021.
Stage 3 of 5G When I've spoken about 5G in the past, I've explained its three different stages. In Stage One, the facilities of these brand-new networks is constructed out, consisting of all the brand-new towers and fiber-optic wiring that 5G will need. In Phase Two, 5G devices go on sale.
And in Phase 3, 5G services begin to be offered. That's when we begin to see applications running on 5G networks. And my 2nd 5G forecast for 2021 is that we will start Stage 3 by this summertime.
However they will care if there are interesting applications that can only be accessed with a 5G phone. So more and more consumers will head out to purchase a 5G phone to gain access to these applications. That causes more 5G apps being established. In fact, 5G is going to open a suite of incredible applications: self-driving cars, the Web of Things, robotic surgical treatment, and more.
The financial investment opportunities moving forward will be enormous. 3. CRISPR Genetic Editing Stepping away from 5G, the next essential innovation I visualize in 2021 is CRISPR hereditary editing. CRISPR stands for "clustered frequently interspaced brief palindromic repeat." It's a mouthful. But it's one of the most amazing advancements in biotechnology.
